When people find out I have lost a significant amount of weight they instantly want to know some tips and tricks I have. In the moment I get flustered and embarrassed and cannot think of a single thing to say so I have decided to compile a list here. These are the things I would have wanted someone to say to me before I started this journey.
1. Relapses Happen
It is an unfortunate fact of life. You will at some point eat a cookie you shouldn’t, skip a workout or two at the gym, or give up for a period of time. Even though the thought of going backwards sucks, it is a natural part of any life change. Everything in life that is a challenge has obstacles. The important part is what you do once you have one. Get back up on the horse and start over.
2. Stop Beating Yourself Up
We have all been in that dreaded circle of hate: you “cheat” and then feel so furious with yourself that you eat more in order to cope. STOP THIS NOW. Every time you punish yourself for your mistakes you make it that much harder to continue. Once you slip up you need to learn from it and move on. Let it go. Tomorrow is another day.
3. Everyone Has An Opinion
People love to give their two cents about everything and weight loss is no exception. You will get dieting and fitness tips from everyone. Everyone. Suddenly your sister/father/neighbor/best friend/dog groomer will be the expert on what you need to do. Unless the person giving you advice is a medical professional or personal trainer (and even then use your judgment) you need to decide what is best for you. You know your body, they don’t. Smile politely and then walk away.
4. Measure Success On And Off The Scale Yes seeing your weight go down is fabulous, but you need to realize that is only a number. Do not let it enslave you or intimidate you. Appreciate other amazing accomplishments like feeling your clothes get loose, walking faster than you could before, or finally wearing shorts! Everyone’s body holds weight differently. Everyone has a different body shape. Learn to take success where you can get it!
5. Try New Things
Whether you decide to try out a new exercise class or cook a healthy meal you saw online – get out there and explore your new lifestyle! If you make weight loss into a burden it will become something you hate and you will ultimately give up. Change your routine up a bit. Go for walks. Ride your bike. Try eating some squash. If you let yourself be open to new things you may just surprise yourself.
6. Don’t Forget Where You Came From
I mean this in an emotional and physical way. Weight loss is not the golden key to being a different person. You will still like the same movies and still have some of the same cravings for candy. This is fine. Amazing even. Don’t lose who you are in your new body. Also – and this is extremely important – become a voice for plus size individuals if you are not already. If you hear a fat joke stand up for the person being made fun of. You were there and had the same things whispered about you. You have an obligation to yourself and others to stop body shaming.
7. Do It For Yourself
This is the big one folks. Weight loss is a personal journey. It does not matter if you do it for your health, your body, or your future. It is a battle. You cannot go through something so wonderfully empowering and difficult without doing so whole heartedly. You will not come out unscathed. If you make the decision to lose weight for reasons that are not your own it will not work. If you love your body then don’t change it. No matter who wants you to lose weight, if you do not want it for yourself, you will not be able to do it.
*This is not a number as it should go without being said but –Be Healthy. Any time you decide to lose weight in an unhealthy manner you are giving up on yourself. Your body is able to lose the weight. It is your mind that is weak. You do not need to lose X amount of weight in X weeks. Rapid and unsafe weight loss is a danger to your body both physically and emotionally.
